Daniel D. Sumrok, M.D., FAAFP
Dr. Sumrok is co-founder/co-owner and medical director of Spirit Lake. It was his special interest in treatment of addictions and pain along with his faith that brought about the vision of Spirit Lake Recovery. As a Board Certified Addictionologist through the American Society of Addiction Medicine, he brings a depth and breadth of knowledge of the progressive disease of addiction. He is certified and trained through the US Drug Enforcement Agency to treat heroin, Oxycotin and other opiate and opioid addictions with the new agent Suboxone. His dynamic outpatient treatment with Suboxone involves a thriving Sunday night meeting and has been very successful with over 150 patients. He is also one of the few doctors in TN listed by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Agency as trained and licensed to provide this unique service.
Presently, Dr. Sumrok owns a family practice in McKenzie and serves as the Director of the Emergency Dept. at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin, TN. He has held various posts in both military and civilian medicine in managerial positions in emergency medicine spanning 35 years. His military service has also inspired a great deal of interest in working with veterans and PTSD.
Dr. Sumrok is passionate about using his medical education and experience to give back. He has made numerous missionary medical trips to Ecuador, Honduras, and the Caribbean. His work partnering with Bethel College now lives on in each graduate of their Physicians Assistant program which he conceived, developed curriculum for, and helped achieve its accreditation.
Mike Kelley
Director of Equine Activities
Mike Kelley is a co-founder/co-owner of Spirit Lake Recovery, LLC and serves on the Board of Directors. His long friendship with co-founder, Dr. Daniel Sumrok, along with their shared faith and vision, helped to move SLR from a dream to a reality.
He operated in the position of Project Manager during the development and construction of the facility and now serves as Director of Equine Therapy and Property Manager for SLR. He is fully certified through EAGLALA as an Equine Specialist in the practice of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.
He brings to SLR 50 years of experience with horses (owning, training, breeding, showing and judging) combined with 40 years experience in marketing and business management.
In 2004 he began to expand his equine interests into the utilization of horses to benefit those who are physically handicapped, emotionally challenged and/or addicted to drugs and alcohol. This led him to his relationship with EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association), which is recognized as the leader in educating and certifying professionals to utilize Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in the clinical and human development fields.
Mike also has over 40 years of ministerial experience as a pastor, counselor, teacher, singer, musician, and music director.
David Johnson MSSW
Treatment Director
David served as the Clinical Director of The Christian Counseling Center of Western Kentucky for sixteen years as a marriage and family therapist. His experience includes alcohol and other drug dependency, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, marital conflict, family problems, abusive pasts, AD(H)D.
Before entering the treatment field David was in full time ministry for fifteen years as a Youth and Family minister. He has worked as a Consultant to Home Health agencies, supervising social work staff. And he has helped churches with organizational problem solving.
In 1992 David received his Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. He also attended Freed-Hardeman College and Bethel College. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
David has been married for 36 years, has two daughters and six grandchildren. He is the Director of the David Johnson Chorus, a 40-member auditioned chorus that tours nationally. He loves animals and being outdoors.
Spirit Lake affords David the perfect opportunity to combine all of his life’s experiences in helping individuals become fully engaged with their world and enjoying life to its fullest.
Lauren Anderson LMSW
Therapist
Lauren is a licensed master social worker who graduated from the University of Tennessee. During her career she has had the opportunity to work at an inpatient drug and alcohol facility as well as a free mental health clinic that served several impoverished populations. She has presented at national and state conferences on the understanding and treatment of anxiety disorders. She is actively involved in research at the University of Tennessee regarding pediatric OCD.
Lauren has worked with a local hospice organization where she was able to do public relations and grief work with terminally ill patients and suffering families. She is a member of the NASW and the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society.
Lauren is a compassionately driven therapist who operates from a holistic framework. She believes that treatment is about balancing the mind, body, and spirit. She has had training in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as several other evidence-based treatment modalities.
Lauren is an avid lover of the outdoors, animals, music, and art, and she regularly incorporates these aspects into the therapeutic process.
