Treatment Programs

Each person who comes to Spirit Lake is treated with respect and provided a confidential and tranquil place for the recovery process to begin. We offer a complete continuum of care including an Outpatient program, Intensive Outpatient program, Residential treatment, as well as a comprehensive aftercare program. Following a thorough assessment by a multidisciplinary team, a treatment plan is developed to fit each person’s unique needs.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our IOP is a short-term outpatient program including multiple meetings during the week . Located in a comfortable and relaxed setting, IOP provides intensive treatment among a therapeutic community of peers. Group therapies are used to promote coping skills, stress management, goal achievement and treatment compliance.

Keep in mind, IOP can serve as the first step towards beginning the journey to recovery. However, it can also serve as a step down following residential treatment. IOP can serve as the first step towards beginning the journey to recovery but it can also serve as aftercare following residential treatment. IOP offers the structure and support for a seamless transition to the next appropriate level of treatment. IOP is also ideal for stabilizing those individuals with a history of frequent relapse.

Emphasis is placed on a holistic approach to treatment that focuses on healing the mind, body, and spirit. Therefore a wide range of treatment modalities are used, including individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, art therapy, music therapy, experiential therapy, and equine assisted psychotherapy. Principles of the 12-Step tradition are given special emphasis. Each person is offered spiritual guidance and is encouraged to find their way to God. Below are some descriptions of the types of therapy our team utilizes in residential treatment.

Evidence-Based Practices

Spirit Lake Recovery’s treatment program incorporates evidence-based practices, i.e. techniques that scientific research has proven to be successful in producing positive results.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that feelings and behaviors are caused by our thoughts rather than by outside stimuli like people, situations or events. If we can change our thoughts, we can change how we feel.

CBT challenges people’s cognitive distortions and facilitates replacing them with truths. In recovery it helps people replace their diseased way of thinking with a healthy, more whole way of thinking.

Experiential Therapies

Experiential learning is learning through experience and reflection on doing. Recognizing that people only learn a small percentage by means of what they hear and only a slightly larger percentage by what they both hear and see, residents will participate in activities in which they will be challenged to involve their body, mind and spirit. Some of these activities will be art therapy, music therapy, using nature in therapy, hiking and exercise. Most prominent of experiential therapies will be the use of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an effective therapeutic approach that has been shown to have a positive impact on individuals, families, and groups. EAP is not teaching people to ride horses; all work is done un-mounted so safety is ensured. Residents, under the guidance of a mental health specialist and an equine specialist, interact with horses in a wide variety of contexts. These interactions become metaphors for issues in the resident’s life.

Residents become more aware of what issues have kept them in their diseased place. They learn ways to overcome these issues and move toward a healthier life. Our EAP program follows the guidelines of the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA).

12-Step Model

Since its creation by Bill W. in the 1930’s, the 12-Step Model and its most familiar form, Alcoholics Anonymous, has helped millions of people achieve and maintain a life of sobriety. Residents will receive a copy of the Big Book and the principles of the 12-Step will be utilized on a daily basis at Spirit Lake.

Family Therapy

Involvement by family members is considered crucial to the success of our residents. It is essential that the significant people in the patient’s life be involved in the treatment process.
These important players in the resident’s life will be invited to participate in therapy. They will receive information that will help them deal with the devastation often created by their loved one. They will learn how they can be helpful in motivating and encouraging the entire family to live a healthy life.

Medication Management

The residents will be under the care of Spirit Lake’s physician and addictionologist Dr. Dan Sumrok. Dr. Sumrok has developed great success using Suboxone in the treatment of opioid dependence.
When indicated, residents will receive medication for the treatment of any mood disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

Aftercare

Aftercare is a vital aspect of treatment and provides a strong support network. Whether clients are a part of our residential treatment or outpatient programs, our treatment team will prepare them for their transition away from Spirit Lake. Aftercare is also available to our clients for their lifetime. We are committed to our clients’ success at every stage of treatment and work with them to facilitate their journey to a recovered life.

Detoxification

Although detoxification will not take place at Spirit Lake, we do have numerous relationships with local medical facilities that will give the utmost care to potential residents who need detoxification.
